10 Legendary & Extraordinary Classics that every bookworm must read

Animal Farm

Animal Farm is a satire on human politics that tells the fact that the one in the power will always oppress the weak. The story also presents the power of manipulation and how powerful people twist and bend words for their greed.

The Great Gatsby

This classic gives a very deep message for today’s world. Since everyone nowadays is running after money. But is that worth it? The story presents the rich lives of the east coast upper class of long Island. How their lives are empty and morally decayed where no one has a sense of ethics.

1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four)

1984 shows what would be humanity’s fate if we were to live by other’s will. The story shows a figure by the name of ‘Big Brother’ who watches everyone and everything. The metaphor ‘Information is power’ comes to new life in this dystopian where ‘the party’ controls everything you do. And the story is another great satire on a totalitarian government.

Dracula

A young man, Jonathan Harker travels to the castle of Dracula where he witnesses and experiences supernatural things that he didn’t even imagine could exist. Dracula is a purely fictional story that has given birth to a whole new genre. Though vampires today have been romanticized, the original Dracula was a human bloodthirsty monster.

Lord of the flies

This fiction presents a very calm, serene, and beautiful visage at the beginning. But as it progresses, the calm turns into chaos, the serenity turns into insanity, and the beautiful setting soon turns into a war field. The story, in a very mundane way, shows the ugliness and savagery of humanity if not kept in check.

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a feminist ideology novel that shows us the everyday struggle of Jane Eyre. How she is forced to behave in a particular manner as was defined for the women of that era. She fights to gain an equal status, financial independence, harmless love, and a sense of belonging in a world that treats women as submissive to men.

To Kill a Mockingbird

The story of this book throws light on many social issues. It focuses on racial inequality, prejudice, the indictment of law, and many other. But it also presents the coexistence of good and evil, the importance of moral education, and how lying can be used to destroy or protect someone. In a nutshell, this story contains many important life lessons and points out numerous social evils.

Little Women

The book, Little Women shows women’s struggle between personal growth and family duties. It is set in the 19th century where the gender gap was slowly decreasing. But despite this, gender stereotypes still prevailed. Through the story of the four women, the author has presented four different ways one can live a good life as a woman even if bound by society’s constraints.

Pride and Prejudice

This romance is one of the most beloved love stories of English literature till time. The love story of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett had to overcome many obstacles in order to have a happy ending. The story also shows the rigid social themes such as gender inequality, class, reputation, toxic family values of that time. And the never-ending loop of “Pride and Prejudice”.

Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights presents the destructive never-changing love of Heathcliff and Catherine. However, the author doesn’t present a definite perspective if they should be condemned or be idealized for it. There are repetition and double presentation in the story that makes it that much believable as it shows that history repeats itself. And the best part is the author lets the readers perceive and understand the story in their way, without providing a definite perspective over things.
